My family and I are going to Montreal next week and I was wondering if you could give any tips on places to go/things to do/etc. They don’t have to be car related. As for “gift shops”, I stumbled upon !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! store I found while randomly clicking around in street view.

Depends what you want to see...

The Old Port and Old Montreal are classic destinations full of beautiful buildings, sights, and tourist traps. Some good restaurants, too.

Little Italy and the Jean Talon public markets are a good visit. Plenty of good shops and cafes. The Plateau and Mile End offer a more ecclectic visit, full of interesting people, some shopping, amazing bagels, plus you’re right next to the mountain. There’s the Olympic park, the botanical gardens, downtown, St-Josephs Oratory, bike rides down Lachine Canal, etc.

As odd as it sounds, you have to get fresh bagels before you leave. A hike up the mountain is also a must, as is a visit to old Montreal for food.

The last time I was in was for the F1 GP, so I didn’t have much time to do exploring. BJ seems to have listed most of my highlights already. :)

I am not a Montreal dweller. However I did go on vacation there once. One of the best vacations ever. Went to the casino and the racetrack. There’s museums and Mount Royal. We did a day trip to Quebec because we needed people to treat us like scum.

Is it true anyone can drive on the track for free under a speed limit?

Well to be honest we took a bus to the casino so I didn’t drive the track.

Drive up Mount Royal (from whence Montreal), some great views of the city from there.

St. Catherine’s Street is the city’s main drag, some of the best bars and shops are there.

Be sure to explore Old Montreal. If you’ve never been to Europe, it - and Quebec City - are about as close as you can get without crossing the Atlantic. Lots of great restaurants there. If you drive into the old city, I hope you don’t have a sporty suspension on whatever car you’re driving, since the streets still have their ancient cobblestones.

The old Olympic Park (Montreal hosted the Summer Games in 1976) is worth a visit too, especially the Biodome.

Otherwise, you’ll be happy to learn many Montreallers still speak English. Many are either perfectly bi-lingual or know enough to get by. Enjoy your trip!

As long as there is no conflicting event on the track or surrounding island, yes. Expect lots of bicycles and there are stop signs. It’s probably not as fun as it could be. I did it once in late October, much more interesting because there was no-one.

Bagels at St-Viateur on St-Viateur West, corner of Parc. Open 24 hours. Get a sesame bagel fresh from the oven... So tasty!

Bars and nightlife, check out Crescent street. Bit of a cliché but there are tons of places to have a pint or a drink.
